Solo Travel for Women: Safest Destinations to Explore

  • By GCoco

I've always been a staunch supporter of solo female travel. Traveling alone allows you to experience the world more authentically and gain a deeper understanding of yourself. You discover your strengths when you test your abilities in unfamiliar environments. Over the past decade, I've traveled to dozens of places solo. I know safety is paramount for solo female travelers. That's why I wanted to share the countries where I felt truly safe and relaxed, allowing me to explore.

So, whether you're a seasoned solo traveler or a first-time solo traveler seeking inspiration, these destinations are, in my experience, perfect for solo travel for women.

Treasure Destinations for Female Solo Travel

Taiwan:

I consider Taiwan a "gateway to paradise" for solo travel. It's incredibly convenient and friendly, and from the bustling Taipei to the mountains and seas of Hualien, there are surprises everywhere. The night markets here are incredibly delicious, and the hospitality of the Taiwanese people is truly impressive. On several occasions, when I asked for directions, they not only provided detailed instructions but even took me directly, making me feel incredibly safe during my trip.

Note: Be careful to keep your belongings safe in night markets or crowded places, and avoid going to remote alleys alone late at night.

Malaysia:

If you're looking for a trip filled with local flavor and delicious food, Malaysia is my top choice. In Penang, I cycled through the murals of the old streets, searching for authentic, piping hot char kway teow and an iced white coffee. Prices are affordable, the locals are welcoming, and even if you get lost, you'll be happy to find directions. Enjoy the food and shopping to your heart's content. This destination is excellent for solo travel for women who want to explore vibrant cultures and cuisines.

Note: It is recommended to choose areas with high traffic when traveling at night, be aware of motorcycle robberies, and try to carry your bag in front of your body.

Japan:

Japan is a top choice for many solo women travelers because it offers the ultimate in safety, convenience, and cultural experiences. Whether on the Tokyo subway or the ancient streets of Kyoto, you'll feel a sense of security and order. You can enjoy a meal alone in a small ramen shop or soak up the unique atmosphere at an izakaya. Despite the language barrier, the Japanese people's courtesy and helpfulness will make your journey incredibly smooth.

Note: If you're going to an izakaya alone at night, it's recommended to choose a place with lots of people and bright lights. Also, be aware of the last train departure time to avoid missing it.

Finland:

If you crave ultimate tranquility and purity, Finland is the perfect choice. Renowned as one of the safest countries in the world, you can explore with complete peace of mind. Experience the simplicity of Nordic design in Helsinki, and travel solo to Lapland in winter to chase the magical northern lights. While Finnish people may be reserved, they are genuinely friendly, and their unique tranquility will help you find inner peace during your travels.

Note: Winter temperatures here can be very low. Please prepare plenty of warm clothing and check traffic conditions to the aurora viewing site in advance to ensure safety.

How to travel safely alone?

While solo travel can be fun, safety is always your top priority. Here are some practical tips for solo travel for women:

  • Be well prepared: Research your destination in detail and be sure to purchase an eSIM in advance to ensure you have internet access and can contact your family immediately upon arrival.
  • Stay alert: Keep your belongings safe and choose well-lit, busy streets at night.
  • Trust your instincts: If a place or person makes you uncomfortable, trust your instincts and leave immediately.
  • Be socially moderate: When interacting with locals, avoid sharing sensitive personal information.
